Rolling River Loses Beloved Past Administrator Marjorie Sherer
It is with the heaviest of hearts that Rolling River Day Camp announces the passing of their beloved Partner, Associate Director/Preschool Director, Marjorie Sherer, on April 12, 2015.
Affectionately known as “Miss Marjorie” to all of our pre-school children and Skipper campers, Marjorie poured her heart and soul into Rolling River for 14 years. She not only directed our pre-school since 1992, but built the foundation of our camp from day one! Anyone who visited camp was greeted by her personable handshake with a “hello” and by the time they left the building, they had all of their questions answered and left with a smile.
As a supreme educator, she loved the children and they loved her in return. Marjorie did it all working side by side with Rhonda and Mark. Among her many accomplishments at Rolling River, she directed the pre-school, supervised the office, managed the camp’s American Camp Association (ACA) and Board of Health strict regulated paperwork and oversaw construction projects….talk about multi-tasking! To this day we still say we don’t know how she managed it all, but she always did without a hitch! Prior to retiring from RRDC in 2006, she made sure that all of her RRDC knowledge and wisdom was transferred to the next generation and we were most appreciative and proud to take on the challenge. We even honored the RRDC mascot, “Myrtle the Turtle”, after her and her husband, Larry, a longtime member of our leadership team. Marjorie’s favorite animal was a turtle and they relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!
To say that this icon and legend of Rolling River Day Camp will be greatly missed is a complete understatement! The amount of people she reached out to throughout her many years in her position was immense; students, campers, parents, staff, administrators, community leaders and many more. They all adored and respected her. Marjorie Sherer depicted the true meaning of a professional. She was the most special person to work with and we were proud to call her our friend.
The Rolling River family joins her family in mourning during this most difficult time. If you were fortunate enough to know and love her like we did and would like to send an acknowledgement, please send it to the Camp Office and we will forward your condolences to the family. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Marjorie Sherer, please note that all funds collected will be used honoring her memory as we are working on establishing a future camp scholarship in her name.
