Every great summer at Rolling River begins before the very first bus pulls in. It starts on Meet Your Mateys Day, the morning your camper gets to step onto our grounds, shake hands with their counselors, and meet the friends they will be spending the whole summer with. By the time opening day arrives, camp already feels like home.
If your family is new to Rolling River, or if you are simply counting down the days until summer, here is everything you need to know about one of our favorite traditions.
What Is Meet Your Mateys Day?
Meet Your Mateys Day is a relaxed, welcoming day designed to take the mystery out of that all important first day. Instead of arriving to a sea of unfamiliar faces, your camper walks in already knowing their group, their counselors, and a few new Mateys to sit with on the bus.
The goal is simple. We want every camper to feel excited and confident long before the summer officially begins.
What to Expect
When you arrive, our team will help you find your camper’s group right away. From there, the morning is all about connection and comfort.
Families can expect to:
- Meet the counselors who will be caring for your camper all summer
- See your camper’s group and start making new friends
- Ask our staff any questions you have before opening day

Why It Makes Such a Difference
First day nerves are completely normal. A new routine, a new bus, and a new group can feel like a lot all at once. Meet Your Mateys Day gently smooths all of that away.
When a camper has already met their counselor, found their group, and laughed with a new friend, the first morning of camp becomes something to look forward to rather than something to worry about. Parents feel the difference too. There is real peace of mind in handing your child off to a counselor whose name and face you already know.
Wear comfortable shoes, come ready to HANGOUT AND PLAY, and bring all of your questions. Our directors and staff will be on hand and happy to help.
